Opal Inlay Ring Repair

If you’ve seen some of my previous inlay jewelry repairs, many are really in-depth and require removing and re-cutting all of the stones, but not all of my inlay repairs have to be that extensive!

This client came to me with a ring they had just purchased and noticed that one of the stones fell out. She came to me looking to replace it with a stone that had a similar feel: something vibrant that made the ring “pop.”

Though the missing stone was more of an orange color, she was interested in having me see what other stones might fit the bill. I made a few Photoshop renderings with actual pictures of some stones in my collection ranging from orange spiny oyster shell, red spiny oyster shell, a vibrant red composite, and even some pink Australian opal.

She really loved many of the options, but ended up going with the pink opal since she loves opal!

From there, I cleaned the inlay channel and cut a small piece of opal to fit it perfectly before re-epoxying it in place.

Once it was set and cured, I was able to cut down the surfaces flush, polish everything, and her inlay ring was ready to be worn again!

Finished opal inlay ring repair

This is her completed opal inlay ring repair, with the missing stone replaced with pink Australian opal, which really plays up the reds and pinks in the other opal in her ring.
