Mother of Pearl Inlay Ring Repair

It can be so disheartening to have a very special piece of inlay jewelry that’s missing stones since it renders it essentially unwearable.

For this client, she lost one of the main pieces of mother-of-pearl in this 14k gold and diamond ring, but was able to find and save the corner piece.

She wanted to see if that one piece could be recut, but didn’t think anyone could do it since it is a very specialized repair that requires the mother-of-pearl to be carved on all sides so that it will fit perfectly along the curvature of the ring—until she found me!

When her ring arrived, I first cut the mother-of-pearl to fit the channel that was missing a piece, then working on the dome of the material afterwards.

(Pictured is an in-progress moment of cutting and fitting the mother-of-pearl for this 14k gold inlay ring repair.)

Once I cut and polished the mother-of-pearl and was getting ready to re-epoxy it in along with the small corner piece, I noticed that the other two pieces were loose. I went ahead and removed those, cleaned all of the inlay channels thoroughly before setting them all back in place.

Here is a before and after picture of this mother-of-pearl inlay ring repair. In-person, there is only a slight difference in color from the new piece compared to the older pieces of mother-of-pearl since they have yellowed slightly as they aged and being exposed to the elements (body oils, household chemicals, etc.)
